Sad iPhone Lovers in Canada
The iPhone is all set to hit the shore of Canada on July 11, Rogers has announced the price and the different service plans. Instead of welcoming the long awaited device, iPhone fans are about to march out to the streets to protest the seemingly unfair pricing of the device. iPhone lovers have gone to the extent of putting up a protest site to decry the announcement and had been collecting signatures over the internet across the country. The signature collection is actually for compiling a petition to Steve Jobs to intervene in this pricing episode. Apart from this, some personal letters are already sent to Steve Jobs.
These all started when Rogers announced the price of the iPhone few days ago. According to the announcement, the phone will be available for a mandatory three year contract. Yes, this sound somewhat unfair as carriers in other countries gave subscribers the flexibility of choosing contract duration.
The price for the device is actually the same as in the US, with the 8GB and 16 GB models to be sold for $199 and $299 respectively. All is wrong with the service plan. The plan offers voice and data service ranging from $59 to $115. The promise for unlimited access to Wi-Fi at all Rogers and Fido hotspots cannot cool down these enraged iPhone fans. Potentials buyers are probably comparing the two year contract at AT&T and the extra year here with Rogers. They are also aware of O2 giving away the phone for free just for signing an18 months contract.
Rogers Communication Inc is the only national carrier in Canada that supports GSM wireless technology and the iPhone uses this. I hope Rogers is not taking this as a chance to rob iPhone lovers in Canada. Some Rogers insider also supposedly have said there is confusion in the market. With all these confusion and anger around Rogers do need to give a good explanation about what really is going wrong. The petition of the enraged fans is also set to be posted on the protest website on the day the iPhone is released around the world.

Wrong: The plans range from $67.45/mo to $122.45/mo. System access fees and 911 fees are not some special fees that get passed on to other entities. They go straight into the general coffers of Rogers.
Rogers makes up some lies about how the fees are needed to provide infrastructure upgrades or some other garbage. Well then what was the other $60 for? If you need $67.45 to provide service, then you should be advertising $67.45. Do not falsely advertise $60 and then hit us with 12% increase in the small print.
Anyone who repeats the cell phone industry’s lies is only helping them in their false advertising campaigns. Please do not ever say the plan is $60 again (actually I think you said $59).
