Some 3G iPhone Shortcuts and Tips

Have you just purchased a 3G iPhone or upgraded to iPhone firmware 2.0? Stop doing things manually; there are some tips to make things easy for you.
Browsing Shortcuts:
Hold down the .com button to select the ending of the domain name after typing the website URL in the space bar. The usual endings such as, “.com,” “.net,” “.edu” and “.org” will be displayed. Tab on any of the endings to insert it to the address bar.
If you are composing a mail, hold down the period key to select the endings of the email address. This will also display all the endings such as, “.com,” “.net,” “.edu” and “.org.” Tab to insert any of the endings.
Shortcut for Capturing Screenshots:
Do you know there is a built-in shortcut to capture screenshots?
Yes there is and it really works.
Open the screen that you want to capture, hold the home button and hit the power/sleep button. You’ll notice a momentary screen flash. Your screen is captured and it is saved to the Camera Roll.
What to do when you are out of 3G coverage?
When 3G signal is low, your iPhone become almost useless. Right now the 3G iPhone is not quick enough to switch over to 2G when 3G signal is low. Remember this tip to remain always connected. The process is somewhat manual, but it is worth the effort.
Go to the Settings page and turn off the 3G, the phone will automatically switch to 2G. This could take some time but it works if you are in an area where there is good 2G network.
So next time when you are out of 3G range, don’t end up kneeling down and curse Apple for this technical issue. Apple is sure to fix this issue at the earliest.
Kill that GSM buzzing sound:
All GSM devices are unfriendly to audio speakers. The 3G iPhone is not an exception; it just starts buzzing when it is placed near a pair of speakers. Huh, this is irritating and one simple solution is to take the iPhone far away from the speakers.
For a more permanent solution, purchase RadTech’s iPhone Dock Extender for US$39.95. This kills all that annoying buzzing sound.

Killing the iPhone buzz buzz zzz
So you think $39.95 is too costly for killing that annoying buzzing sound? Here is a very low cost plan. Find an empty Red Bull Drink can. Drink the content, some cutting and shaping work to be done to make it into a homemade iPhone dock.
What is to be done?
Cut and shape the can as a shield and attach the dock at the bottom as shown in the image on the left:
Let your iPhone sit there and be mum whenever you place it near your computer or speakers.
The test of this case is done only on the first generation iPhone. Possibly could also work for the iPhone 3G. This is an effective cost cutting trick try out.
Typing faster using the hold Key.
The virtual keyboard on the iPhone has two sections, we all know that of course. One is the QWERTY keyboard and the other contains special characters and numbers. While typing on the iPhone, most of us tend to switch the keyboard very often whenever there is a need to insert special characters such as numbers and punctuation marks. Actually we can save many precious taps and also make our typing speed a little faster. How?
Use the Hold Key instead of tapping on the special character button or the ABC button to switch between the screens of the keyboard.
Just hold down the hold button and tap on the special character button and tap on the special character you want to insert. When you release your finger you are back to the QWERTY keyboard and your special character is already inserted. This is a simple trick, but really saves some precious taps. Try it out.
Making your first generation iPhone dock a 3G dock.
The iPhone 3G does not come with a dock and it is not easy to find one too, but you still need a dock right? Get a sharp knife and packing tape and 100 grit aluminium sandpaper. Mark out the area that need to be carved out. Make sure that you don’t hurt yourself or spoil the iPhone dock and work like a real artisan. What you need is just patience and artistic touch. If you can do this, you just saved $29.

The holding of the shift key doesn’t work for me but there is a far better way of doing this:
When you want a special character, just press and hold the .?123 key and slide your finger over to the symbol you want without lifting it. The moment you lift your finger it will insert that symbol and return to the QWERTY keyboard.
Another tip for getting rid of the buzz is to simply enter airplane mode. Job done. You won’t get texts or calls of course but I suspect you’ll struggle to get them with a mangled up Red Bull can around the phone too! Also, you won’t scratch your phone or be accused or being a hobo by your friends…
Also, it might be an idea to get a Universal Dock and just use the adapters for changing between your devices. It’ll cost you an initial layout but after that any adapter for the iPhone 3G II, III, IV etc will be pence.
Not paying more for iPhone docking stations compared to iPod docking stations of the same features. I noticed they charge more because its made for iPhone. They can keep their products - and me my money. No thanks.
