The Dark Knight at the App Store

I’m watching The Dark Knight a few hours from now, and quite looking forward to it. Heath Ledger is the main reason, of course.

Another reason is that I just came across a report which states that Nokia Tube 5800 has been used in this movie at some point. I guess they took a cue from Samsung’s YouTube campaign. If I manage to spot the Nokia, I’ll be sure to tell you about it.

While Nokia is working on getting some publicity, it looks like it’s working the way round for the iPhone. An app called The Dark Knight: Hahaha, available for free,  lets you “take a picture, overlay Joker artwork from The Dark Knight on it, and send it to a friend.”

The App Store page claims that the App is from Warner Brothers, but I’m not sure if that’s true. The link to the Warner Brothers’ tech operations web site leads nowhere, and the app overall looks rather crude, not something Warner Brothers would do for a movie as high profile as The Dark Knight.

But it’s an interesting idea. Selling a range of merchandise with all their important films or music albums and tours is a commonplace among music companies and film studios. I can well imagine free apps like Ice Age, iWater Horse, iSpiderman, and iShrek making their way to the App Store as part of this standard merchandise. And since worldwide attention is what film studios crave, the iPhone, with its growing world-side presence would be an ideal platform for them.

Such “seasonal” apps, available for free and capable of generating excitement and curiosity among users for a few weeks, could actually be big in the App Store.
