Apple Releases first month’s App sales data for the developers

Apple has finally eased its cult of secrecy a little and released its first monthly sales report for the developers. Prior to this, Apple was providing daily stats, but inexplicably, only since 31st July. This stat finally reveals the curtain for the app developers of iPhone and iPod touch. Developers can now review their sales records for the entire month.

Though not all the devleopers have shared their records, some have and there are some interesting trends:

1. The fortnightly euphoria: Though most developers have not shared their sales record yet it seems that the initial two week euphoria was enough to make you a millionaire in a fortnigt if you had managed to hit the pulse of the iPhone-atics. Though most developers are tight-lipped about it, it seesm they gained largely from the first two weeks. Expectedly, sales did slow down a bit thereafter.

2. Busines not as usual: You don’t expect that from Apple anyway. The App Store is not just about big and established brands.  Big players like Sega (Super Monkey Ball) are doing big business as usual but unheard of developers and even individulas are not doing badly at all.

Consider the case of Eliza Block’s crossword app, 2 Across, priced at $5.99. A fourth year philosophy graduate whose app has been generating, well, $1800/day in revenue. Or the Tap Tap Tap team, who, in one single week, earned $6,927 in revenue.

As the iPhone is poised to be launched in 20 more countries on 22nd August and the iPhone sales expected to sky-rocket to 40 million/year, how about a career as an iPhone App Developer?
