SoundMeter on your iPhone

We’ve seen a whole bunch of applications making it to the App Store ranging from fun games like Crash Bandicoot Nitro Card 3D, informative apps like Lenova Summer Olympics 2008, to a downright bizarre app like Studio. In stark contrast, here’s a sane and sober utility app: the SoundMeter by Faber Acoustical, which turns your iPhone into a sound level meter. The function of the app is simple, clever and downright practical: as the name suggests, it lets you measure sound.

This app measures sound pressure levels associated with noise pollution. Handy, if you want to score a point with your co-worker who is too loud! Or, maybe, you could use this app to make sure you don’t play the music too loud when you are throwing a house party.

The iPhone’s built in and headset microphone enable you to measure sound levels. It also measures time-weighted and equivalent sound levels. Besides the app keeps track of maximum and peak levels, and saves a display of sound levels. You can even record your comments.

Not for professional level use though, since the app doesn’t meet the IEC and ANSI standards. For all that, an excellent alternative for all the other amateur handheld meters for hobbyists use.

The price is a little steep though, at $19.99. After all, it’s not a professional level app, is it? But if you’ve been looking for an app like this, it’s well worth the money. Recommended.
