State of the Art Storytelling through iPhone
Application: Shadows Never Sleep

…the story of a restless shadow on a nighttime adventure. I describe it as a “zoom narrative” which takes advantage of the multi-touch interface of the iPhone and iPod Touch to allow readers to swipe their fingers across the screen and zoom in and out of images instead of turning pages.
–Aya Karpinska, developer of “Shadows Never Sleep”
When you launch the book app, you will see a series of squares with strikingly minimalistic images and words in black and white embedded on them. The images and the story move around together. The shadows are white and they move around the stark black background when you zoom in/out of them. You touch upon the images and see words distributed in multiple designs. Sometimes words are arranged in zig-zagged structures, sometimes letters of a word are arranged in a half -moon structure. (and many others)
This is not a book that you just “read.” You “touch” it and navigate through it. A brilliant, off the track, imaginative app that blends storytelling with touch-screen movements. If there is one problem, It is that the app lacks an audio element–something that will certainly add to the overall quality of the app. Probably a husky voice pronouncing the words, according to their visual distribution?
Now, what is the story? It’s a children’s story, but there is something about the shadow that will appeal to you no matter what your age is. Find out what it is. Get the app. Simple, artistic and innovative. This app is a welcome beak from the regular noise in the App Store.

thank you for this kind and thoughtful review! i agree, the piece really “screams” for audio. for my next such story, i’d like to discover what’s possible with sound + iPhone.
one more thing to add - Nick Dalton of 360mind programmed the app itself, i was in charge of everything else. i never got much farther than the “Hello, World” tutorial
Hi Aya
Glad that you liked the review. The concept behind the app/story (should we call it an “applied story”?) was particularly great. Looking forward to your new iPhone story.
