Apple to let Verizon launch iPhone 3G in 2009?
Rumors are surfacing again that the iPhone 3G will be coming very soon on Verizon Wireless Network. Well, Verizon was the first preference of Apple and we never knew what went wrong during the negotiation that the iPhone finally went to AT&T. AT&T and Apple have an exclusitivity contract that expires in 2010. That’s the current situation, anyway. Now, what are the chances that Verizon will launch the iPhone 3G in 2009? AT&T will not like the idea though, but that doesn’t matter much to consumers.

The blame game of the iPhone 3G is finally settling down with many software updates that Apple has released so far. At the end we come to know that AT&T’s network is somewhat patchy and accounts for the frequent 3G call drops that users experience. The laboratory test conducted on the antenna of the the iPhone 3G further cleared Apple from earlier blames. Users are are pointing fingers at AT&T for not delivering what the iPhone 3G was made for.
The recent total AT&T connection blackout in the whole of East Coast still haunts our memories. We have never heard of such experience from other network users. Why Apple chose AT&T and only AT&T out of the four major carriers in the US is a mystery. In almost all the other countries where the iPhone has been launched, there are multiple carriers. Why not in the US then? Verizon is the carrier if Apple is planning for a multiple carrier at all, as it is a partner of Vodafone, which has launched the device in about 15 countries. And bold presumptions put that the two companies are sitting at the negotiation table.
Apple has made many changes since the launch of the first generation iPhone. It has gone into the hands of multiple carriers in many countries and unlocked iPhone 3G is available for users in Hong Kong after the failure of many rounds of talk with China Mobile. Is this the right time then for Apple to extend the iPhone 3G to other carriers here as well? This will mean reaching out to more users and also giving consumers the choice of handpicking the better network.
It could be true that those users who have been on Verizon for years find it hard to switch over to AT&T for the sake of the iPhone 3G. The only way out for these users is to depend on the iPod touch to access the App Store resources and use other phone for the sake of receiving and making calls. There is no statistic of such users though.
Those on Verizon network testify that both customer service and network coverage of AT&T are bad and the same is applicable for users on AT&T to say the same thing about Verizon. This is something that has to do with getting used to one system. As consumers what we need is a fair deal, a win-win kind of solution. For Apple, making the iPhone available on other networks means reaching out to those users who love the device, but hate the network, and for user the move brings the flexibility of choosing what they prefer.
Finally, there is nothing concrete about the rumor that the iPhone 3G will be available on Verizon network. This is a wild guess, but a welcome and a good one that will be good for both Apple and iPhone lovers. However, AT&T may not like this bright idea.
