Healthcare and fitness apps for the iPhone: Update

The number of healthcare and fitness apps has just run into the ninth page at the App Store. While that is nothing compared to the avalanche in the games category, you still have 169 apps till date to choose from to keep yourself fit and healthy.

We have come a long way when MIM was the lonely healthcare app at the app store (June 30, 2008) and when healthcare and fitness app as a category did not have much to boast for. After MIM in fact, there were three phases when not a single new healthcare and/or fitness app showed up at the App Store. (July 08-01, July 22-16 and July 27-24 were the blank days for healthcare apps)

Compared to that, since the last month, we have seen 111 apps, across all categories showing up at the app store.  For instance, today alone we have three new arrivals at the App Store - Cardio Track, iNeedAName and Psychic Moov.

So now you have choices for apps to track your hospital records, or to keep a tab on the calories you consume, or your BMI and so on.

The doctors and people with medical interests also have something for them. For instance, you have apps for tracking patient records or for browsing medical publications from renowned databases.

In a nutshell, iPhone is changing the traditional healthcare domain in terms seamless, un-intrusive physician-patient interaction.  Plus adding a bit of hi-tech halo to the hitherto drab domain of healthcare.
