How to buy Applications at the App Store: Best Practices
These are simple tips that will help you save time and will also ensure that you don’t unnecessarily throw away few bucks ever time you visit the App Store.
- First try to decide on what type of applications you want to download and go to the appropriate category such as, Books, Business, Finance, Games, Healthcare and Fitness etc.
- Read the reviews in the App Store carefully. Ignore reviews that demand that the application be free. It is very likely that such people have not actually used the application.
- If you are not in US store, you may find that some applications have very few reviews or none at all. In that case, temporarily get iTunes to display the US App Store instead. How to do this?
Click on the iTunes icon and select the My Store preference as US (highlighted in the image below)
Click on the App Store side link: You are now in the US Store.
- Don’t rely too much on reviews that point you to other applications that do the same thing but are free. Chances are, these applications might be free, but they may not offer the full range of features that the paid application does.
- Once you have clearly identified all the features, consider the pros and cons, and identify what you must have and what you can do without.
- Now consider the price factor. The common App Store behavior is to look at the free stuff first, and check paid applications only afterwards. As long as you have the budget for a purchase, a paid application is a good idea, as it will, in most cases, offer you greater productivity, and also save you lots of time. Do not go by the screenshots and icons displayed in the App Store; the graphics may be tempting, but the application/game functions might not be worth much.
- Do not entirely trust negative reviews that complain about the pricing. Instead, just consider what the application is worth to you.
Ignore all reviews that report application crashing. Yes, there are occasional bugs in the applications available in the App Store, but there are hardly any show stoppers and nothing as bad as an application that simply doesn’t open. Remember that your 3G iPhone is as much a computer as it is a phone. So anytime anything crashes try a reboot. It really works.

Out of curiosity is it possible to have some type of trail on the apps, before you have to buy. Don’t know how it would work but certainly would be practical.
Hi Lightshiner,
For applications deployed after Apple enforced that “purchase to comment policy” you can fully bank on the ratings and comments posted in the App Store. For older applications you are sure to find reviews on iPhone dedicated websites. Browse for review information on the internet.
Hope this help. Thanks for the write up.
