Mandelbrot: The abstract “touch” of fractal geometry on your iPhone
Fractal geometry is not exactly everybody’s cup of tea. However, this is the sort of app that promises to make it so. You are bound to like this app even if you are not a maths nerd. The point about this education app is that, it is about bringing tangibility to highly abstract fractal geometrical concepts like the Mandelbrot and Julia sets.
What does this app do?

It brings to life, to touch rather, the highly abstracted fractal geometric sets created by Mandelbrot and Gaston Julia. This is how it works:
The app has an “i” button at bottom right which turns on the color palette. Scroll to choose one color scheme.
Zoom and pinch to delve into the depths of the infinite combination available in the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. But most interestingly, you have the option to switch between Mandelbrot and Julia sets by using the action button at the top and also by dragging your finger along the screen.
What intrigued me was the combination of color-schemes. The more you change the color, the more you have fun. What about having an aesthetic fractal geometric wallpaper for your iPhone? You can add any of these colorful abstractions to your iPhone’s photobook and show off a really aesthetic wall-paper to your friends. I have one and it looks quite stunning.
The only complaint is that this app, with all its features, (zooming and pinching included) is a bit slow.
Overall, a very imaginative app, to bring color and life (tangibility) to the world of fractal abstractions.
You may also want to look at: Fractal Touch. This is a similar app, but scores less than Mandelbrot on two counts – 1. it shows a tendency to crash at very un-opportune times and 2. Mandelbrot is free vis-à-vis the 2 dollars Fractal touch. Also, if you need it, Mandelbrot is available in English as well as French, Fractal Touch is only available in French.
