“Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum”: “Talking Like a Pirate” Apps at the App Store

Just before and after the holy date of 19th September, the “Talk Like a Pirate Day ”, some pirate apps entered the App Store. All these apps were devoted to the holy cause of carrying the spirit of Pirate Talk beyond 19th September. Here is a quick chronological look at them:

Pirate Battle Sound FX (August 29): Generates a host of pirate sounds. It has a pretty striking interface.

Pocket Pirate: (September 11): Proposes to carry the holy spirit of “Talk Like a Pirate Day” beyond 19th September and does that. Tap on any of the icons to make your iPhone/iPod touch talk like a pirate. Drawback: Not a really comprehensive range of pirate lingo.

aye Phone (September 12) In tribute to the immortal  spirit of Davy Jones.  This has a very cool interface though. Instead of touching different icons, touch only the great white skull and get a Davy Jones like feel.

Pirate Glossary (October 5): As the name suggests, this is a glossary. This does not have icons as striking as Pocket Pirate or Pirate Battle Sound FX. However, this one is apt in making you an expert in the “Arrr” lingo.  Plus, this app has a very nice “Blimey” button to generate pirate sounds, ahem, swearing, randomly. Its list of pirate sounds is also categorized properly under various terms that give you a comprehensive idea.

These apps (to be found under the Entertainment category) provide a plethora of weird jaw breaking, hair rising sounds emitting from just slight tappings on your iPhone. Besides, they provide a comprehensive range of pirate glossary.

(If you want to know what these sounds are and what this lingo is, download any of them. They are worth the money.)

These apps do enough to instill enough “Pirrattitude” in you, except for letting you taste the 200 year old rum.

I only have one complaint? I can’t find enough of Jack Sparrow.
