Top ten iPhone games in the App Store
In matter of months the number of applications in the App Store has gone up to all time high. The total number of applications has crossed 4000 out of which 1113 are games. Now, the main concern as a buyer is how to select the best games? For free applications taking a wrong decision is not disastrous, however, buying a paid and a useless application is just burning your pocket. You cannot try out a game to make your purchase decision. The reviews were not helpful either, before Apple implemented that ‘purchase to comment policy.’ Now it’s good that only those who have purchased can write reviews.

Mind you, these are all paid games; if you’re not ready to spend do not stay here, you’ll be tempted to buy.
The games category is the most exciting and yet the most confusing section in the App Store. This article gives you an overview of some interesting, addictive and engaging games.
Unlike the other categories in the App Store, we do not have the option to sort the pages of games category either by date, popularity or name. This must be due to the high volume of the games category. Labeling a game as good or bad depends on the taste and choice of the players. Also, since the launch of the App Store, many games have risen to the Top Ten or Top 25 list, and, now that it’s been over two months, it’s probably a good time to come up with an “all-time” top ten. To get all the top ten games, you need to shell out $44.99.
So this is the list of the games I think are the best of all, so far. If you’ve just bought an iPhone and looking to load it up with fun games, you couldn’t possibly go wrong with my list of recommendations.
The selected games are not purely category based. Here is the countdown:
Number 10 iKick: One of the simplest games, yet a very addictive one. Tap a ball to make it stay in the air as long as you can. The highest score till today is 306 taps. Beat that, there is no story line if you are looking for one. Once you start tapping there will be no end until you beat the score of your friends.
Number 09 Billy Frontier: “So you think you are a cowboy, huh? Drop your Guns!” Be a cowboy flip out your gun and take down outlaws in a duel and shootout missions. You are a good cowboy! Run like Carl Lewis and avoid being stampede by a herd of animated cows (half kangaroo and half cow). Eating chillies to speed up is not a bad idea after all. This is all virtual exercise for your health.
Number 08 Cro-mag Rally: Have you ever seen Flintstone riding like Schumacher? Download this game to see how automobiles made of wood, stone and bones can be so fast and fancy. Spend your spare time playing this race game to experience the wonder of stone-age warriors.
Number 07 Line Rider iRide: This is a game worth sacrificing a burger if you like Line Rider game on the internet. Draw a line/landscape of your choice and see your hero skiing down like a real pro. You’ll remember ‘Big Z’ in Surf’s Up.
Number 06 Blue Skies: This is a flying game. Graphic element is awesome and exploitation of the accelerometer feature is simply amazing. Fly a chopper around to destroy enemy tanks, clear landmines and take down enemy planes. Clear the 30 levels and in the end get hooked to the thought that you should have been a pilot. Tap the lower right corner to shoot missiles for taking down enemy planes and tap the lower left corner for clearing tanks and mines. You can always fly back to base for refueling and reloading you bombs. Keep an eye on your artillery and fuel indicator to avoid a crash.
Number 05 Super Monkey Ball: One of the earliest and the oldest games in the App Store. Millions of downloads and none of the players of this game has sued the company. This implies the game is fun. The graphic is awesome. The accelerometer cannot be used for a better purpose. It is just exciting piloting a monkey to collect bananas and reach its destination. The monkey is a drunken monkey (I mean if you don’t know how the accelerometer works) and the path becomes very unfriendly as the level goes up.
Number 04 Tetris: This is an old game from a company that has got a name in the gaming world. Nevertheless, the game still triggers some kind of excitement. Arrange the blocks into a solid wall as they tumble down the screen. Pinch, shuffle, drag and drop to fill the gaps on the wall.
Number 03 Fire Drop Deluxe: Fire Drop Deluxe? Yes, there are a bunch of games build on the same game concept, but I find this to be the most engaging, addictive and challenging among all those games. Aurora Feint too difficult to get yourself eliminated (you end up playing forever), reMovem is also the same, I mean boring and Golden Skull is the longest and the most retarded one. You can play the games one whole day without being eliminated even once. With Fire Drop Deluxe, you end up playing for hours. It’s even better as a journey mate. The game concept is simple but addictive enough to trigger a cool argument with Andrew and Victor for they disagree that the game is too difficult to tame. The trick is be extra alert when you are at level 14, 29 and 42. You can earn many bronze and silver badges and make your co-workers envy you if you are somewhere in Rank 10-20 worldwide. Phew, that was something.
Number 02 Chopper: Shooting and bombing game where you have to fly a chopper, dodge RPG fired from enemies and rescue civilians trapped in the midst of tanks and enemies. If a civilian is killed during the operation you fly back with a heavy heart. Just kidding, you get fewer points. I bought this game for $7.99, and thought it was a good deal, but guess what? Just after I spent the $8, the price was reduced to $1.99. You are lucky if you have not already purchased this game, you’ll not regret spending $1.99 for a good game that can keep you company when you are bored. The game is gripping, the graphics and controls are just perfect, and the variety of terrain and climate, can keep you engaged for hours.
Number O1 Real Soccer 2009: This soccer game is a must have even if you have never touched a football in your entire life. Of course you must know how it is played. Everyone knows the simple rules of soccer so no worry here. The more you know the more fun it is, actually. Writing too much kills the whole fun, download the game and bring the whole soccer field to your iPod touch or iPhone and relive all the championships and leagues that you have missed.
Disclaimer: There are 1113 games as of today (6th October, 2008) in the App Store and it is not easy to pick 10 games and say these are the best ones, seriously. This article is not intended as a law book for game lovers. You are all welcome to make your list and submit the ranking if you are not satisfied.
Note: This list is exclusively for October 2008. We will bring this game ranking every month to ensure you all get the best games.
