Eric Schmidt will join Obama: Goodbye Google
The Google Storm
Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO has finally announced that he is quitting and is joining the young team of President-elect Barack Obama. The decision was made known late Thursday night during Google’s top brass conference. Sergey Brin and Larry Page were reportedly surprised by Schmidt’s decision. Google has started searching for a new head to lead the company. An insider revealed that the new chief is expected to take office before Christmas.
Though it is not clear yet what portfolio Schmidt might hold in the Obama Cabinet, some workers close to Obama are speculating that Schmidt could be given the post of Secretary of Energy or could be appointed as the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency. For now, the main focus of Obama team is on the financial crisis so, the announcement of Schmidt’s post is not expected very soon.
Obama will be the first President to appoint a Chief Technology Officer in the Cabinet rank to get the Government up to date with technology. Eric Schmidt was earlier offered the post, but he turned down the offer for unknown reasons. The latest development has contradicted the prediction of many industry analysts that it is rare for someone with Corporate America to jump on to the Government bandwagon. Schmidt’s decision has added value to Obama’s campaign words ‘Change we Need.’
The Decision
When Schmidt was contacted, he said that it is time for him to leave the work to someone else as he has more pressing work at hand. Lately, we have seen Google getting abuzz with green energy discussions, Larry and Sergey started discussing about green energy in 2007 about this time. Schmidt, Larry and Brin were even rumored that the trio will start a new company for generating and supporting green energy. Schmidt is now more inclined toward helping America to achieve self sufficient energy status. Here is what Schmidt said:
I have done my best for Google; it’s time for me to move forward and do something for the country. America can be self sufficient in energy; we need to focus more on green energy. This is what I am going to do.
The Competitors
Yahoo and Microsoft are surprised by Eric Schmidt’s abrupt decision. Industry experts are predicting that this will be the best opportunity for the two companies to compete and come to par with the number one search engine and advertising agency, Google.
On the other hand, Apple is happy about the Schmidt-Obama deal. Obama will be the first President to use a laptop in the White House, and Eric Schmidt in an interview with MSNBC News Network last week said that he hope Obama chooses the MacBook over Windows. The endorsement of the Apple Macbook by Schmidt was a great boost for Apple. Looking forward, Apple is banking on Schmidt to endorse the iPhone over the BlackBerry series.
Apple Blessed
Eric Schmidt is the right person to persuade Obama to use the iPhone instead of his old BlackBerry; the President-elect banks on Eric on whatever is technology. If Obama were to switch over to iPhone, 53% of Americans who voted for him will want iPhones and those people who sided with Obama around the world would definitely go iPhone. However, the question for now is will Eric Schmidt promote the novice G1 phone for Google’s sake or recommend the better received and accepted iPhone?
