Reasons to jailbreak the iPhone: iPhone 2.2 and after
iPhone firmware 2.2 has been released. Jailbroken iPhone users will not be able to upgrade the firmware as there are many chances of their devices turning to bricks; so said the experts. iPhone Dev team has not announced any tentative date when they can crack 2.2, this could be a long wait. A post Sir, step away from the keyboard explains what can happen if you upgrade to iPhone 2.2 now. Many jailbroken iPhone users are already facing the 2.2 fire.
The temptation
One of the main reasons people jailbreak their devices is to get unlimited fun using both the content in App Store and other third party applications. Well, that was not a bad idea; it worked out fine for me too except for the painful procedure every time when something goes wrong. Maybe I was impatient; I restored my device after knowing the trouble is too much. I am happy I did that. However, for a few days I do missed the tethering application and of course the video recording app (that crashed so often), which I didn’t find in the App Store. I learned to live without the apps soon, and later realized that the apps were actually for showing around.
The App Store has about 6,500 applications and the number of third party apps available for jailbroken iPhones does not come anywhere close to this. A few hundred is the total count.
The Complaints
First we heard about the problems jailbroken iPhone users faced when using the new MacBook series and now this headache with the new iPhone firmware. At this point, it is worthwhile to consider whether it is wise to wait for the dev team to come out with the pwnage or quickpwn tools for the firmware or just go and de-pwn the device. Jailbreaking is a kind of hobby for some, fun for others and necessity for very few. The trouble anyway is the same in all the cases.
We used to complain that the syncing time for the iPhone takes too long before Apple released firmware 2.1. However, we have no one to complain if jailbreaking takes a long time. There never was fun actually, but just the satisfaction that you have done something successfully in the wrong way.
What you’ve missed
iPhone firmware 2.2 update has brought a score of cool features for un-jailbroken iPhone users. You’ve just been left out. Some of the features that made users happy about the update are the ability to download podcasts directly on the iPhone (we no longer regret that Podcaster was rejected), Google Street view, and other enhancements. Jailbroken iPhones are out of the update party for now.
Apple is closing the software door for jailbreakers. We might still say that Apple is autocratic, yes in some ways. Well this supposed autocracy has made iPhone the most sold and dependable smartphone. Many iPhone users are satisfied and the latest updated features are sure to call back some jailbroken iPhone users to the main Apple platform.
The Future
With iPhone 2.2 update, Apple has gone a step forward, tougher now for other competitors to catch up. iPhone 2.2 also has made things complicated for jailbreakers. Jailbreaking of the Apple device soon will be a thing of the past.
It is possible that the next Apple update will be ready by the time iPhone deve team comes out with the pwnage tool for iPhone firmware 2.2. For users, this means pushing yourselves back in time. While other iPhone users advance into the future, you are sticking to the past. So is it still fun or has jailbreaking become a futile business?

“While other iPhone users advance into the future, you are sticking to the past.”
Or, i am in the future other iPhone users can never reach.
I had a jailbroken iphone (2.1) and had all the goodies that Cydia had to offer, but its reliability was effected noticeably. I now use the standard firmware V2.2 and I can say it’s great but its sooo boring and i already miss the Video cam, MMS, Themes etc.. Streetview is the biggest feature on the 2.2 and its really cool to use, alot better since you can use the iphones touch screen to navigate and zoom.
I hope jailbreaking never fades, cause there are too many benefits that outweigh the number of crashes it encounters…
There are two words that make jailbreaking utterly worthwhile…
“FREE APPS!”
Nothing is cooler than downloading payed games from a torrent site.
I respect your view, but this just isn’t the case. Millions of people run jailbroken phones. Why it’s worth is varies by person, but millions of people will continue to jailbreak their phones. Tethering and video are killer apps. Apple/AT&T will of course come out with a reliable tethering solution, and release a video recording SDK, and a real push SDK, and then IM clients will work to. Perhaps eventually their SDK will catch up - but what about bluetooth stack? unlocking? I think there are some things apple will never get around to.
Oh Really? Prove it! Jailbreaking is not fun? C’mon I enjoy most when my jailbroken iPhone crashed (this happens very often) and for me this is real fun. What can you learn if you have an all the time stable phone like the un-jailbroken iPhone. Experiment with the device as much as you can, it’s gonna last only for three years Max. Apple is already planning to bring out iPhone killer. I don’t mind the time and pain it takes for jailbreaking
Hey guy HELP ME OUT PLZ

Hats off!!! I waited for the Dev Team and I got the tools pwnage finally for 2.2. You should have at least read the warning from the Dev Team experts before jumping the fence, and I am sure they have not come up with the remedy for screwed up phones yet. You have just been bricked. Try re-virginization if the screen has not totally gone blank. That’s the only consolation I can give my dear bricked friend. All the best!!!!!
