International call prices from the iPhone drastically reduced through Truphone app at the App Store

You don’t have to keep a watch on your balance when calling abroad from your iPhone. Truphone, after its experiments with their VoIP app the App Store has now come up with an even niftier solution at the App Store.

The latest service (a significant upgrade on the existing app) is called Truphone Anywhere and it does not require Wi-Fi to work. The application itself is free. The international calls are charged just around $.06 from the US to another country as the calls are passed through the Internet.

The reason it is so cheap is because if the user accepts it the iPhone is connected to a local Truphone server.  The long distance part of the call is then connected over the internet by this server. The local connection to the Truphone server is free since it actually uses the bundled minutes from the customer’s usual cellular service provider.

If an international number is dialed from outside Wi-Fi the caller is just asked whether he/she wants to make a Truphone call. If the user accepts it, then the call is connected by Truphone.

The service is currently available in 33 countries.

Plus, there is this nifty free iPhone-to-iPhone calling feature.  This might work out particularly well for the globe -trotting iPhone user as she/he might save up a lot if they are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Finally,  all these goodies come for free!
