Top Apps of 2008, certified by Apple

May be to celebrate the 10,000 apps mark and help the searchers in navigating through the mazes of the App Store, Apple has come up with a new idea for the holiday season. They have put up a new section at the iTunes that displays the top apps (in terms of popularity) of 2008 at the App Store.  The top 120 apps are there. A small chunk of the 10,000 strong brigade.

The categories chosen are:

Top Overall, Top Games, Top Entertainment, Top Utilities, Top Social Networking and Top Music. All these are organized under two categories – Top Paid Apps at the left hand column and Top Free Apps at the right hand column.

Top paid apps:

Koi Pond (Overall), Texas Hold’em (Games), Koi Pond (Entertainment), Units (Utilities), Mobile Chat (Social Networking), Pocket Guitar (Music)

Top Free Apps:

Pandora Radio (overall), Tap Tap revenge (Games), Top Entertainment (Remote), Flashlight (Utilities), Facebook (Social Networking), Pandora Radio (Music)

Weird fact: Twiterrific Pro and Twitterrific, both made by The Iconofactory, are on the Top 10 list in the Social Networking category. The pro-version is priced at $9.99 and it is the 5th Top Paid Social Networking App while, the free version is placed at number 9.

The only travel apps to have made to the Top 10 are Google Earth and Urbanspoon.

Overall, (no surprises here) Games and Music make the cut.

All is well and good except that Apple is not providing download data. Nope. They like mystery.

Tell us what do you think of this Apple initiative and trend.

The real question is, how much revenue has been generated by these top 10 paid apps. That is the $64,000 question that everyone wants to know.
