Apple to close down the open market democracy? Premium Games section at App Store to promote big publishers

app-store-premiumLooks like the free and open market policy of the App Store is all set to take a topsy-turvy turn. They are likely to put up a Premium Games section where they will be displaying games that cost $19.99.  This seems to have come in the wake of many developers complaining that lesser price rate as well as the huge number of small-ish games are pushing the big titles right out of the top slots, sometimes even out of the top 100.

As PocetGamer.biz reports:

…the initiative will only be open to a restricted number of large publishers, rather than the thousands of smaller developers currently selling their titles on the main App Store.

Now that’s directly contradictory to what Apple vice president of iPhone and iPod product marketing Greg Joswiak told Apple Insider:

It’s (App Store) not somewhere you have to be represented by somebody; you have to be in the development programme, which is very inexpensive.

As we have insisted earlier also (link to excellence page), the flavor of the App Store lies in providing equal footing to small scale, freelance developers and even the hobbyists the same platform as the established software giants. And this has already seen some megastars like Shubway Shuffle.

Where all the open market economy is going? We would like to hear from you.
