iPhone firmware 2.2.1 kills unlocked and jailbroken iPhones

iphone-2211iPhone firmware 2.2.1 brings more work for the iPhone Dev team. The unannounced software update kills Yellowsn0w, the software that successfully unlocked the iPhone 3G. iPhone Dev team has notified unlocked iPhone and jailbroken iPhone users not to upgrade their devices to 2.2.1. Apart from the minor updates the latest software includes baseband update for the 3G iPhone that breaks the unlock  method of Yellowsn0w.

The update, however does not touch the baseband of the iPhone 2G. So for those 2G iPhone owners who just want unlock option, upgrading to 2.2.1 is said to be fine. But iPhone 3G users who either want unlock or jailbreak facility with firmware 2.2.1 have to wait for the Dev Team to come out with the compatible Pwnage software.

What would happen if you upgrade?

If you are using Yellowsn0w on your iPhone 3G your baseband would be upgraded thus making your device invalid for any future yellowsn0w unlock injection. You are fired, you cannot even downgrade your baseband, so says the experts.

For 2G iPhone users, upgrading to 2.2.1 would mean losing the jailbreak facility temporarily.

Apple has found a way to punish iPhone unlockers and jailbreakers again. The mouse and cat game continues, though.

So with the 2.2.1 update, can i update my iphone that is a 2G iphone and the unlock will stay? I am just a little confused because everywhere else is saying yes and no to this, i just want an answer! I just updated it from an unlocked 2.0.2 to 2.1 then 2.2 so i dont care about the jailbroken apps and stuff, i just want the updates and my iphone to stay unlocked! Thanks!

Yes Kelly, the baseband of 2G is untouched. So you can upgrade if you just want unlock facility.

Hey i have the iphone 3g with 2.2.1 frimware so can any help me to downrange it to 2.2 help me and i will try to help you with what ever you want

Kelly

Okay I didn’t get a chance to reply back, but, I successfully upgraded from 2.2 to 2.2.1 on an original iPhone (2G) using iTunes. All I did was click upgrade and that was it! As a matter of fact, I’m using it on EDGE right now! The update has already shown it’s impact. Safari is less buggy (doesn’t crash every 5 seconds), and overall I think the battery life was inhanced a little as well… Strongly recommend because of no problems! Thanks everyone!

Mike

do we have to wait for a quickpwn update as i just updated my 2g iphone to 2.2.1 and tried to quickpwn it but it says there is a firmware error string does the latest quickpwn not support 2.2.1 yet.
thanks in advance

Many users have accidentally upgraded to firmware 2.2.1 on their devices and they have lost their jailbreak. People repeatedly keep asking how to downgrade firmware 2.2.1 to 2.2 in the QuickPWN Forums.
vicon-sd posted a great guide on how to downgrade in the forums at this topic:
Upgraded to 2.2.1? Here’s how to downgrade!
Here is how you can downgrade from firmware 2.2.1 to 2.2:
* Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes. If things had gone horribly wrong while hacking your iPhone and iTunes does not detect your iPhone then you will need to put it in DFU (Device Firmware Upgrade) mode.
o You can follow these steps to put your iPhone in DFU mode (this is required only if iTunes does not recognize your iPhone):
+ Connect your iPhone to your computer.
+ Turn iPhone off.
+ Hold power and home together for 10 seconds (exactly).
+ Release power but keep holding home until the computers beeps (observed on a PC) as a USB device is recognized.
+ A few seconds later iTunes should detect your iPhone.
* In the Summary Tab, Hold down Option and press the “Restore” button. If you are using Windows hold down Shift and press the Restore button. (This is an important step as just pressing the “Restore” button will result in restoring your iPhone with the latest firmware which is firmware 2.2 currently, by holding down Option in case of Mac or Shift in case of Windows, allows you choose the firmware file that you want to downgrade to.)
After restoring download QuickPWN from http://www.quickpwn.com/downloads and use it to jailbreak your firmware 2.2.

@ adam
i would really appreciate if u could help me upgrading and unlocking my iphone 2g to 2.2.1

ricky

hey there peeps, if you’ve upgraded to 2.2.1 on your 3g, your s*@t out of luck when it comes to downgrading. I’m assuming we all know about the permanent baseband upgrade. It’s true, i’ve managed to get my firmware down to 2.2, but the baseband just stays up there at 02.30.03…..and for those of you thinking thats ok, its not cause it wont be able to get a signal from your carrier with a 2.2 firmware and 02.30 baseband. My next experiment is to downgrade to 2.2 firmware, jailbreak it at 2.2, then i’ve been looking up how to keep jailbroken apps with updates and see if somehow i can manage to keep the cydia and installer apps on there………wish me luck and cross your fingers….i’ll keep y’all posted….

GEORGE

Ok this is my problem I got a iphone from my friend I think it’s a 2g it is the one with the gray back and it’s a 8g it had all the apps and everything but you couldn’t hook cuz it didn’t have$ a sim I guess I don’t know but then it said upgrade or restore but mind you I did put another friends iphone on my itunes just to see what happened, but anyway after punting my iphone on Quickpwn I get this firmware error string whats is going on??? It finds the IPSW file by itself so why wont it work ??? I did find my friends from her G3 but I del. It so I don’t understand why it wont work??? Any ideas

Michelle

In case there is no signal from your carrier after using quickpwn successfully -> Download BootNeuter from Cydia on your iphone using your Wlan. Turn on all switches -> reboot ->turn em on again -> FLASH
worked for me…

Mayank

i successfully upgraded(jailbreak, Unlocked) my 2G iphone from 1.1.3 to 2.2.1 firmware, using QuickPWN …. restored my contacts, SMSs and all but as expected i lost all my 3rd party applications…

NOW THE PROBLEM IS: that this new firmware installed INSTALLER 4 and CYDIA which doesnt have sources like i had earlier… and the good ones are only available at itunes store…

SO IS IT SAFE TO DOWNLOAD APPLICATIONS FROM ITUNES ON AN UNLOCKED IPHONE????
Since the registration requires your CREDIT CARD No. i hope there wont be any kinda penalty… i am only planning to download the free applications..

SOMEONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!

Paul

@ Mayank

I carry a 3G 2.2.1 and trying to downgrade. I followed your instructions, problem is choosing the firmware. Can you rewrite the instructions again?

Mayank

choosing firmware????

are you talking about the second step in QuickPWN???

if so then you have to download the firmware file, all firmwares are available here: http://mytopfiles.com/search.php?ss=iPhone1,2_2.2.2_5H11_Restore.ipsw

Do inform me if you problem was solved….

Mayank

ngaiz

I dont have a iphone and it’s great no updates…ring ring,hello ; )

Hi, I have a major issue with my iphone 2G. I unlocked and jailbroke it using Quickpwn and firmware 2.2.1 and it works fine for about 3-4 days, then it freezes and locks up again. Then I have to restore it with itunes and unlock it again with quickpwn. I used the correct bootloaders, firmware and latest itunes version. For some reason it just stops working after a while. I live in Australia, if that helps.
Any advice? thanks

Adel
