SlideRules: An excellent puzzle game for the iPhone/iPod touch users

sliderules-puzzle-game-for-iphoneAndthill Games, the developers of Monkey Pole Climb and winners of the IMGA Best Gameplay award as well as the Grand Prize winner at Motorola MotoDev awards has released a numerical puzzle game for the iPhone and iPod touch users. SlideRules.

The core of the game Slide Rules is simple. The game is based on numbers and directional logic. As the title suggests, it is all about sliding (both vertically and horizontally) and putting the numbers to their places. How to place them depends on the numbers at the bottom left where you get to see the goals.

There is, however, more than just sliding the numbers (which, mind you, gets pretty challenging once you reach the higher levels.) However, there are ghost blocks, blockers, some raised slides, magnetic tiles, padlock stops that render a tile dead that won’t move and so on.

There are also a four playing modes – practice, survival, expert and classic and you need to clear a minimum number of level before going on to next the next levels.

The Expert mode has 10 puzzles, but they are movement bound, while the survival mode is time bound.

The classic mode has 60 levels of increasing difficulty and the developers say that if you complete all of them there will be a bonus puzzle which is “scarily difficult”. I have not gone that far yet though!

At the initial levels, the challenge is to complete the levels in as less number of moves as possible. However, that scenario changes when the ghosts and the lock blocks start to appear and the puzzles themselves become more challenging.

Interface: I have a personal fondness for the interface which retains the browninsh look of a real time slider. As with the iPhone puzzle games, the ability to touch through adds that extra bit of life to this game.

There are no user comments at the App Store yet, but expect that to shoot up since the developers tell that they are planning the release of a Lite version which is in the process of being approved by Apple at the moment. This lite mode will contain 10 levels from the main game and sure to act as a teaser as these levels will not be the first 10, but will be chosen at random.

In a  nutshell, a pretty challenging a likeable numerical puzzle game.
