Tap to let your child master the Times Tables through an iPhone education app

FlashTables

The iPhone as a medium of education has started gathering attention. Especially for the kids. Why is it so? Take the case of the Flash Table. This application makes the boring Times Table (from 0 to 12, upto 12×12)a cakewalk for the parents if they are looking to drive home those concepts into the heads of their children.

Presentation: The Flash Table app uses different variations and methods to drive home the concept of Times Tables to the learner. If your child is unwilling to learn math, use this app.

It does:

1.    Provide the full list of Times Tables.
2.    Provides practices
3.    Provides tests
4.    Provides times and non-timed versions of tests.
5.    It randomizes the tables.
6.    By using the shuffle cards option you can reorder the cards and hence the equations to test your child’s memory, speed and accuracy.

Using the iPhone interface: The Flash Card app uses the iPhone screen for swiping –both sideways and also up and down, providing different way outs each time.

Improvement: More tables would have certainly added to the app’s capabilities. That aside, the developer probably would have used some more cognitive inputs. For instance, in place of just numbers, some of the cards could have contained both numbers and images.

That aside it’s probably a bit pricy for what it does.

As the developer of this app I have to disagree with a couple of the points above.

“Improvement: More tables would have certainly added to the app’s capabilities.” Traditionally children do not learn times tables past 12×12

and adding pictures to the flash cards would surely distract from the task at hand which is that of learning the actual ‘times tables’. Note: this product is not ‘primarily’ intended for very young pre-school age children.

Price, is as always subjective but must be considered against that of traditional non-interactive paper based flashcards which could potentially cost $5 or more. And more importantly are not always at hand or interactive.

Apart from that we appreciate the review, as a side note we are currently working on a new version with foreign language support to follow shortly after. Look out for further frogameleon titles coming soon!
