Tech Rumor? Qualcomm chip in the iPhone

qualcommIt is not yet absolutely certain since the guys concerned, Qualcomm, have not yet commented on anything. But as is the general norm in the blog-o-sphere, silence generally turns out to be true. So what’s the big news and big deal?

According to a report, the rumored iPhone nano is rumored to be run on Qualcomm chips.

Is it another rumor that will never see the daylight of truth? Highly unlikely, since Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group analyst Craig Berger has also said that some “industry sources” have told him that the iPhone nano will appear in the second half of 2009 and will be powered by a Qualcomm chip in it.

Incidentally, Qualcomm has already stepped into the Android-o-sphere by putting a chip inside HTC, the first Android powered phone. However, putting a chip in possibly the trendiest gadget of next year, Qualcomm will gain significantly in the semi-conductor market, especially in the light of recent developments which have seen their key customer Samsung indicating that they would also be buying chips from Qualcomm’s competitors Broadcom and Infineon.

However, what remains to be seen is that not exclusively this chip war, but also whether or not Apple takes the same fragmented market approach with the iPhone as it has taken with the iPod line.
