Dell’s bit to enter smartphone business rejected by carriers

PC maker Dell’s plan to enter smartphone business has been stalled for now. The company is not yet ready for the venture. Network carriers have rejected the move citing that the company has no distinguishable features and design models that  can attract smartphone users.

dellShaw Wu of Kaufman Bros has this to say about Dell’s stalled plan: ”From our conversations with supply chain and industry sources, it appears that it ultimately came down to lack of carrier interest,”

Though  the company never did confirm that it is working on a smartphone, analysts predict tough competition with RIM’s BlackBerry phones, Apple’s iPhone and soon to be launched Palm’s Pre if Dell joins the race. To play a vital role in smartphone business, Dell needs to provide something new and innovative both at the software and hardware fronts.

According to Wu, Dell has not abandoned the intention to join the smartphone race, but has gone back to the drawing board to come out with something innovative and unique that could capture the attention of network carriers. We still hope to see an attractive model from Dell.

Dell seems to be confident about their venture too. Well, if Apple and Acer can do, Dell definitely have the right to assume that they can do too.
