iTunes gift card algorithm hacked
From cloning of the iPhone to cracking of iTunes gifts’ vouchers code, Chinese technicians have proved they indeed are the masters of these arts. Taobao an online shopping site in China is openly selling iTunes gifts cards worth $200 for just $2.6 since the past one and half years. The cards are illegitimately created by hacking the code algorithm used by Apple in creating the gift vouchers.
The owner of the online shopping site told Outdustry that he paid the hackers to use their service. When the sales of illegitimate gift cards was started last year, the cards worth $200 were apparently sold at higher rates, however, to attract more customers the price was slashed to the present price. The same report says that there are thousands of illegitimate cards on sale.
Now, how do Apple deal with this new from of purloining? There is a possibility that legitimate gifts cards could be invalidated if the code embedded in that card is already used in one of the bogus cards and if it’s already redeemed. We’ll know soon how Apple differentiate between a bogus gift card and a legitimate one.
