One million iPhone 3GS sold in three days

If you were one of the unlucky customers who wasn’t able to activate your new iPhone 3GS and are still wondering what really went wrong with Apple and AT&T, here comes the reason.

iphone-3g-s-and-iphone-3gApple released a PR today that the company has sold over a million of iPhone 3GS models in the first three days the device hit the market. The company also announced that more than six million customers have already downloaded iPhone OS 3.0 in the past five days since its release.

So, one million customers were trying to activate their iPhone 3GS the past three days (activation delay is understandable now). The number here excludes the number of iPhone 3G 8GB model the company could have sold for $99 simultaneously. This year’s iPhone sales is thus a more impressive sales stunt than the launch of the iPhone 3G and the first generation iPhone in 2008 and 2007 respectively.

Wall Street analysts estimated that Apple would be able to sell about 50,0000 iPhone 3GS in the first three days. Well, Wall Street estimation is wrong this time and I was wrong too in assuming that many might not go for the upgrade because of the steep upgrade price customers need to pay for the minor features the 3GS offers.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning. With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.” Seems like Apple magic is really working now more than ever.
