Even after 2 years, I am still using Apple’s iPhone
Apple’s iPhone is one of the best things that happened, which took us a step further into a technologically efficient and simpler world. It made most of us bid goodbye to Motorola Razr, BlackBerries, Windows Mobile, etc. That was two years back, and it seems long enough cos Apple has refreshed their iPhone two times since the launch of the first generation iPhone on June 29, 2007.
The introduction of the iPhone 3G and the App Store came in 2008 and it took us miles ahead of other smartphone users. The iPhone 3GS came in 2009 by which time the App Store has already reached the download mark of one billion applications. All these make up an impressive technology history.
Many smartphone makers have tried to take on the iPhone with equally innovative devices but failed in the mission. Most of them, we’ve forgotten by now. The latest possibility of a competition came from Palm, the company launched their much hyped Pre that runs on webOS weeks ahead of the iPhone 3GS. However, that early launch didn’t help much in making impressive sales.
The boldest prediction came from Palm investor Roger McNamee way back in March when the iPhone 3GS and the Pre were yet to be launched:
“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone… Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later… Think about it — If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy.”
The hint in that statement was that every iPhone users would do away with their phones and line up for the Pre. The reasons for switching would be either the iPhone has become outdated in two years time or for not wanting to be with AT&T anymore.
That was a wild prediction, instead of lining up for the Pre, most iPhone users patiently waited for the launch of the iPhone 3GS. Many new customers sign up for the iPhone 3GS. Those are the reasons why one million iPhone 3GS were sold just in three days.
McNamee also said: “Think about it — If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market.” Two years down the line, we have seen that the updated iPhone (3GS) still is the coolest product on the market. I still use the iPhone after two years. I still see myself using it until the day some company comes forward with something as great as the iPhone 3GS and the App Store.
