Hero Defense; iPhone battle defense game review
The colorful graphics excited me as soon as I set eyes upon Hero Defense. The colorful theme is maintained throughout, but as colors alone don’t decide how good a game is, let us see just what our hero is upto here.
In Hero Defense, the enemy is the dwarfs who are planning an assault on the peaceful villagers. And it is upon the hero’s brave shoulders to safeguard the castle. If you have déjà vu regarding the storyline, don’t fret too much about it; just hope that it is not another typical battle defense game.
To start off, you are given the choice between three difficulty levels, two maps and three types of weapons. You can upgrade or choose another type of weapon as you progress further into the game.
Once you are into the game, there is hardly time to breath, as the dwarfs keep coming relentlessly. They come from three different directions, and you have gates to block two of them, so make sure that they stay sturdy.
As you slash and destroy more and more dwarfs, you go on to new levels and get rewarded with gold coins. You can use these coins to repairs your gates or get special abilities.
To use the abilities, tap on the icons located at the bottom of the screen. If the icon looks grey, know that it is on cooldown, and it will be some time before you can use it again. But when it shows green, it indicates that you can either upgrade it or buy another one. This happens only when your hero reaches a new level, so you will have to work your way to it.
Send enough dwarfs to the afterlife, and you can up your Rage Bar till it shows red. Once you accomplish this, you can shake your device to unleash extra damage.
Now, the downside. The dwarfs don’t look like dwarfs! There is hardly any difference between the hero and the dwarfs, so if you think your hero is going to be a giant among dwarfs, well, nope, not happening. The hero also seems to have a mind of his own since he battles with the dwarfs automatically. Sometimes you’ll have to tap furiously if you want him to be fighting another dwarf elsewhere on the map.
If some of these snags are removed, it’d be a great game. Nothing really bad about it right now, but if you ask me what sets it apart from other battle defense games, I’d go umm…err…perhaps the color? Hehe.
