Palm proposes, Google disposes
Back in March, Roger McNamee made a wild prediction that in two months time most iPhone users would switch over to Palm Pre. Reasons cited for the mass exodus were; contract term with AT&T would expire and that Palm Pre would be a smarter phone than the iPhone.
June came and so also the launch of the Pre and the iPhone 3GS. The prediction turned topsy-turvy, more people signed up for the iPhone in spite of their love-hate feeling for AT&T. Seems the prediction was meant to be a publicity stunt rather than a serious one. Apple managed to sell a million unit of iPhone 3GS just in three days while Pre sales report were not made public for reasons best known to Palm.
Slowly, we came to know that Palm would do anything to compete with Apple with their Pre. They even let the Pre sync with iTunes to boost sales of the device before it was yanked by Apple with a software update. The latest desperate move from Palm to realized their most cherished dream is to willingly port Google Voice on Pre if Google at all develop the app for Pre users.
Apple rejected Google Voice app citing it duplicates the functionality of the iPhone. The rejection was unfair from users point of view and there was befitting discontentment voiced for that. iPhone users are trying to forget the imbroglio though the app would have been super handy.
What Apple rejected, Palm is ready to embrace with the hope that it might wow more users to the Pre world. I accept it’s a good decision if only Google is interested in the venture. Sad reality for Palm, Google has been disheartened by the rejection of their application in the App Store.
For now, Google seems to be interested in developing browser based Google Voice application, which lack key features of a native app that users actually want. Harsh luck!
