The dearth of RPG games in the APP Store was a good enough reason to check out Elven Chronicles. The question of whether it lives up to the excitement and fun of its genre is a different matter altogether, and so we shall explore just that.

The storyline opens up to reveal a dialogue between a young knight and a spellcaster, and they plan to journey together and destroy the evil forces in the land. There is not much in the way of a storyline, which can either be a good or bad thing. Too much of story details can clutter the game play, but then a bare plot can leave us feeling detached from the RPG element of the game.

As for the game play, it follows the standard mode with foes to battle using attack, magic, items to use, and escape options. To make our way around the map, we simply have to touch and drag on the screen. There are treasure chest and enemies all over the place, and a single touch is all it takes to interact with them. Experience points are added with each enemy we vanquish, and a new level brings about more magic items.

The game play is not much of a difficulty or challenge, but it makes for non-stressful play, if that’s what we are looking for. The controls may take some getting used to like when trying to talk to the townsfolk people, but they serve their purpose well once you get the hang of it.

Elven Chronicles has beautifully done graphics, and the artwork deserves a thumbs up. The sounds may also complement the game well.

This is one game that might not blow you away, but I would say it does not disappoint either. It is good enough to make the RPG fan happy, for though it may not offer a lot of new facets, all the standard features are there. If the developers could work out the few glitches like the lack of an auto-save option, it would be a much better game. And hopefully, it would set the trend for more RPG games for the iPhone.
