Yet another puzzle game makes its way into the App Store, but with a lil twist of its own. In Shoot Gem from Liang Sai, the game play slightly differs from the usual tap and burst mode. Instead, a single tap on a gem sends it to the top of the screen, and another tap sends it to the column where we want to place it. When it is placed and grouped together with three or more gems of the same color, they are eliminated from the screen.

There is a bar that shows our progress; once that bar turns blue in color, the level is complete and we move on to the next. We can save our score and compare it with other players’ scores. The scoreboard displays the best scores of the week, month and overall.

I wish that our current game could be saved so that we can resume it when it is convenient for us. It is a bit of an irritant having to start from level one each time we play the game. Also, it would be fun to have a timer option and see if we can reach a certain score within that time.

But on the whole, Shoot Gem is a game for those times when we don’t want to stress ourselves out too much, but simply relax and play away idly.  It has nice graphics with an Oriental look to it. I would recommend it even for the game play alone; it is definitely worth the $0.99 price tag.
