Qubes joins the match 3 puzzle tribe on the iPhone
There are currently more than 1,000,000 applications available in the App Store, so it is quite understandable that all of them will not exactly blow us away with their awesomeness. And it is also forgivable that every game in a certain genre cannot come up with its own unique twist that will set it apart from all the others of its kind.
I truly am not trying to be menacing here, but Qubes is not exactly an awesome game. It can best be described as an okay game, for no fault of its own. It’s just that there are too many like it around, that I can’t help saying ‘Seen that, played that.’
Now let me set aside the explanation and get into the game. Qubes is a match 3 puzzle game that we have to match according to color. We are allowed to move adjacent Qubes in any of the four directions, all with a single swipe of our finger.
Qubes has two game modes. In the Play Level mode, there is a target number of Qubes that we have to match within a certain time limit. We are elevated to the next level if we accomplish this. The Play All mode is more of a challenge. We need to complete all the levels in succession. Even though we can play a level again if we fail, we lose 1000 points every time we try again.
If we see no way out, we can take the help of the hint feature, but that will decrease the time by 30 seconds. Sometimes we get relief in the form of bonus stars which make all the Qubes of the same color disappear when we touch them. On the flip side, there are locked Qubes too; these particular ones can’t be moved, and we need to arrange Qubes adjacent to them for a match.
Come to think of it, it’s not such a bad game after all. It has decent graphics and the blinking Qubes are quite amusing. We can always try out the Lite version and see if we like it enough to spend $1.99 for it. On the whole, Qubes is a good enough game if our expectations are not sky high.
