No one saw this coming, atleast not so soon, but the Google Nexus Phone has outsold the iPhone in global markets last month in February. And if it is not enough that it beat iPhone sales by 16%, the Google Nexus One’s grip on the market is predicted to carry into the rest of the year and 2011 too.
This lead has arisen not as a fluke but because of several reasons. For instance, the Google Nexus One comes ‘jail-broken’ and is not attached to a single carrier whereas the iPhone’s exclusive AT&T carrier contract makes it less accessible.
The Google Android Operating System is also an open-source platform, which makes the development of applications and customization of the phone an open affair. On the other hand, iPhone applications are tightly governed by Apple, and they have a long way to go before it reaches the App Store courtesy Apple’s tough review process.
It should be interesting to see how the iPhone responds to such challenges thrown up by the Google Nexus One phone, and how soon and effective will it be.
