iPhone keyboard to compete with BlackBerry–at last

iPhone keyboard to compete with BlackBerry--at last

Apple has announced that its 2.2 iPhone firmware has a new feature for its fully virtual QWERTY keyboard: the keyboard will behave more like a real, physical keyboard than a software application interface. The new firmware version--expected to be released by December-- adds a little intelligence to the iPhone keyboard, allowing it to keep track of usage: how many times a key has been used, and even how hard specific keys are pressed. Donald Lindsay, Interface Designer at Apple, explained: the technology was always in place--we can track keyboard usage, and the multi-touch screen can also be told to measure the pressure Read More...

The new iPod nano

The new iPod nano

Apple's "Let's Rock" event was fun, full of music. And there were live performances too. Jack Johnson, who's proved to be the bestselling male artist in the iTunes store, performed during the event, and thanked Apple for all the support. And Steve Jobs looked just fine, although a still little thin. He started off by quoting mark Twain: "Rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated." A nice jibe at Bloomberg, who messed up badly recently. The nano-chromatic range of iPod nanos looks simply gorgeous: Which makes me wonder: what's with the chrome concept these days anyway? Google's new browser is called Chrome, and Apple's launch Read More...

iPhone vs. Symbian: Round one to iPhone

Not that it's a surprise, but its happening, at last. Apple’s iPhone is eroding the market share for Symbian, currently the dominant mobile platform operating system. And it isn’t a minor slowdown either. This year Symbian enjoyed a growth rate of just 5%, as against the staggering  50 % annual growth last year. Folks at Nokia as well as the makers of BlackBerry, Research in Motion, have insisted that Apple’s entry into the smartphone market has only expanded the market, and that there is no real threat to them is now proving to be just some brave talk. The smartphone market did Read More...

Perishables –A perfect business calculator for iPhone

Perishables --A perfect business calculator for iPhone

If you were looking for something that would help your trade transactions easier to manage, this is just the app for you. No, it’s not a regular calculator, and yes, there’s a nice one made by Apple already in the iPhone. I’m also aware that there are too many (mostly worthless) calculators out there in the App Store, but none of them is in the same league as Perishables. Perishables is an intelligent business application, one with some genuine utility. And it’s not for you if you don’t buy and sell things every day. For those involved in trade, however, it is Read More...

Win a free iTunes gift card: Write a prize-winning essay

Win a free iTunes gift card: Write a prize-winning essay

This is a nifty little application that doesn’t do much, but is decent at the little it takes up.  Available in the News category in the App Store, this app gets you the latest stories on Digg. (Use Shovel to Digg, geddit?) The stories are sorted into simple categories: Popular, entertainment, tech, and so on. You can view the summary in the app and load the complete story in Safari, view pictures and comments in the app itself, and also email links to friends. As far as I can tell though, you can only view stories already posted to Digg. You Read More...

Frommers Travel Guides on iPhone

Frommers Travel Guides on iPhone

Frommers, the publishers of  the spectaularly successful travel guidebooks series  are now selling their books in Apple’s App Store too.  For now, they have released books about London, Paris, San Francisco, and New York. I suppose more will be coming soon. This isn’t the first time Frommers is focusing on selling to people who use  Apple products. Their series of audiobooks, on sale for about $7 each, has been available in the iTunes store for quite some time now, and has enjoyed reasonable popularity among iPod users. So it’s hardly a surprise that they are now targeting iPhone and iPod touch Read More...

T-Mobile’s App Store: Doomed to fail?

First of all, lets get it right: T-Mobile’s App Store will not be a single store like Apple’s. Instead, it will be a chain of stores, each of which will cater to a specific device. You can’t really expect very different devices, running on very different platforms ranging from Android to Windows Mobile to just about anything, to have any soft of compatibility in common. The software aside, even the hardware is going to pose some really daunting challenges. With each device has sporting different graphics capabilities, different processing powers, a variety of screen resolutions and screen sizes, even displaying the Read More...

iSpy with iPhone

Apparently, the iPhone works great as a hacking tool.  Not the official, under warranty iPhone, but a jailbroken one. The method seems to be straightforward: Jailbreak the iPhone Set it up with malware to sniff wireless networks, and to”call home” at regular intervals with the latest information Ship it to a nonexistent employee at the company you want to spy on. This will take the iPhone into the office, where it will lie undisturbed, possibly for days, while someone figures out that the package is not  wanted In the meantime, the iPhone will have access to the wireless networks, and can collect a wealth of information Not Read More...

T-Mobile launching App Store too!

It’s been a long time coming, but we’re glad its happening. T-Mobile is working on an App Store clone. Apparently, the store will allow all T-Mobile users, irrespective of the device they use, to purchase apps from this “t store”. So there’ll be an SDK, there will be an app submission, pricing, and revenue process for developers, the works. The payment will be a little more complicated than Apple’s straightforward, no questions asked 30% commission. But it will still be generously rewarding for the developers. And a developer site is already in place. For T-Mobile, which has only about 31.5 million subscribers against Read More...
